Open company data in South Korea: official sources, APIs and reuse rights

Open Company Data in South Korea: Official Sources, APIs and Reuse Rights

May 26, 2026

South Korea is one of the stronger Asian jurisdictions for official company-data engineering, but the strength comes from multiple official systems rather than one simple public register download. The useful stack combines data.go.kr public-data APIs, National Tax Service business-registration status checks, Open DART disclosures, Supreme Court registry extracts, KIPRIS intellectual-property data, KOSIS statistics, KONEPS procurement and GLEIF LEI records.

The safe editorial claim is precise: South Korea has strong official APIs and public-sector enrichment routes, but it should not be described as a jurisdiction with one complete free official bulk company-register file covering every legal entity, filing, beneficial owner, officer, procurement record, IP right, LEI and marketing-contact field. Formal register evidence is tied to court/registry workflows, while API routes have their own keys, terms and coverage limits.

This Wave 41 refresh updates the existing CompaniesData South Korea page to the new editorial bar: deeper source analysis, explicit reuse boundaries, visible checklists, Resource Pack, source logos, held-source notes, crawler/indexing QA and a clearer distinction between public company evidence and private contact-data enrichment.

Key Takeaways

  • Best API entry point: data.go.kr is the main discovery and access route for official public-data APIs, including the NTS business-registration status API and procurement/statistics datasets.
  • Best disclosure layer: Open DART and DART provide securities filings, reports and financial data for listed and filing-obligated companies, not the entire company universe.
  • Best legal-register caveat: the Supreme Court Internet Registry Office is relevant for formal corporate-register extracts, but it is controlled-access, not free open bulk data.
  • Best enrichment sources: KIPRIS/KIPRISPlus, KOSIS, KONEPS and GLEIF add IP, statistics, procurement and LEI signals when kept separate from core identity fields.
  • CompaniesData value: practical use needs normalization, Korean/English name handling, identifier matching, source provenance, update tracking and contact-data governance.

Editorial Methodology

This article follows the CompaniesData country-source method. Official public-sector sources are prioritized first. Registry, tax-status, disclosure, open-data, statistics, procurement, intellectual-property and LEI sources are treated as separate authority classes because they answer different business questions.

Every final linked source was checked from this environment on 2026-06-09. Hard 404/410 sources are excluded. Sources that return connection resets, 000 responses, 403 blocks or unstable routes are kept as held-source notes and are not used as clean linked evidence. Favicon logos in the source matrix and Resource Pack are decorative trust cues only; the evidence remains the URL, source owner, access model and reuse note.

Coverage, Access and Update-Risk Analysis

Registry coverage: South Korea source work should not start by assuming a single bulk register. The Supreme Court registry route is the legal-register evidence path, while public-data and tax APIs solve narrower validation and status questions. That matters for KYB, deduplication and audit trails because a business-registration status response is not the same as a court-issued corporate extract.

API and bulk confidence: API confidence is high for specific official layers: data.go.kr datasets, the NTS business-registration status API, Open DART, KIPRISPlus, KOSIS, procurement APIs and GLEIF. It is medium for complete private-company register coverage because formal registry documents and certificates sit behind controlled workflows.

Update risk: NTS status data, DART disclosures, registry extracts, IP records, procurement notices, KOSIS statistics and LEI records update on different schedules. A normalized dataset should store source dates at field level, not one generic South Korea timestamp.

Business-registration status boundary: an NTS API response is useful for validation, but it should not be inflated into legal profile completeness, owner disclosure or marketing permission.

DART boundary: DART is authoritative for filings and disclosure-scope companies, but it excludes many ordinary private companies and should be joined as an enrichment layer.

Court registry boundary: iROS can matter for formal evidence, yet controlled extracts, certificates, authentication, payment and Korean-language workflows make it different from open bulk data.

Contact-data boundary: public company data is not a contact list. Email, phone, contact roles, suppression files and sales-prospecting enrichment need a separate lawful-basis workflow.

Reuse Checklist

  • Authority: record the exact public body, regulator or foundation behind each field.
  • Access route: separate search, API, download, certificate, SSO and paid/controlled extract workflows.
  • Licence and terms: preserve public-data licence notes, API conditions, attribution requirements and no-endorsement language.
  • Coverage: mark whether a source covers all companies, filing-obligated companies, procurement participants, IP owners, LEI holders or aggregate statistics.
  • Freshness: store source access date, last update when available and the parser/version used.
  • Privacy: flag natural-person, sole-proprietor, officer, address and contact fields for privacy review before reuse.
  • Marketing use: never treat official status, filings, procurement or IP data as consent for cold email or phone outreach.
  • Commercial delivery: document transformation, matching and enrichment separately from the official source evidence.

Practical Manual, API and Bulk Options

1. Build the identity and status layer first

Start with the NTS business-registration verification/status API when the use case is validating Korean business-registration numbers or status. Store the queried number, response date, returned status fields, service key environment, portal dataset URL and any error codes. Do not merge this into a legal-profile table without a source flag showing that it is tax/status evidence.

2. Add disclosure and financial filings where they apply

Use Open DART and DART for companies subject to disclosure obligations. This layer can add corporate reports, financial statements, disclosure dates and issuer-level events. It is strong for securities and filing workflows, but it should be joined by disclosure identifiers and company names with confidence scoring rather than assumed universal coverage.

3. Use procurement, statistics, IP and LEI as enrichment

KONEPS, KOSIS, KIPRIS/KIPRISPlus and GLEIF are high-value enrichment sources. Procurement records can signal supplier activity; KOSIS can benchmark market coverage; IP records can add patent or trademark ownership; LEIs can support financial-sector KYB. Each one needs separate provenance because none of them is the official corporate identity source for every Korean business.

4. Treat formal registry extracts as controlled evidence

When a workflow needs formal corporate-registration evidence, use the Supreme Court Internet Registry Office route and document access constraints. A controlled or paid extract can be more authoritative for a legal question than an open API, but it is not automatically redistributable, bulk-downloadable or suitable for broad commercial publishing.

Held Source-Risk Findings

Three relevant official or regulator routes remain researched but are not linked as clean public evidence in this refresh because this node could not verify stable crawler access during QA.

  • NTS API opening notice: connection reset/000 from this node; the live NTS API dataset page on data.go.kr is used instead.
  • KONEPS English PDF guide: intermittent 000 response; the stable KONEPS introduction and portal routes are used instead.
  • Fair Trade Commission data portal API guidance: 000/403 from this node; keep as regulator context for manual review before any future public link.

Missing Data Gaps

  • No single complete open file: South Korea should not be sold as having one complete free official bulk company-register file.
  • Private-company depth: ordinary private-company legal details can require controlled registry routes rather than public API extraction.
  • Beneficial ownership: do not assume public beneficial-ownership data is available or reusable without a source-specific lawful-use review.
  • Officer and natural-person data: any people-related fields require privacy flags and purpose limitation.
  • Language and script handling: Korean names, English names, transliteration and aliases need explicit matching logic.
  • Contact data: official status, filings and procurement signals do not create permission to email or call prospects.

Recommended Data Model

A South Korea company dataset should be modelled as a stable entity core with source-specific evidence tables. The core table should not hide whether a field came from tax-status validation, securities filings, registry extracts, procurement, IP, statistics or LEI enrichment.

  • Entity core: normalized legal name, Korean name, English/trading names where available, country, status, registration or business number where lawful, and internal CompaniesData identifier.
  • Identifier evidence: source type, source owner, exact URL, access date, response date, original identifier, normalized identifier and confidence score.
  • Disclosure table: DART/Open DART identifiers, filing type, filing date, issuer name, document URL and parsed financial fields where permitted.
  • Registry evidence: iROS extract metadata, certificate context, access route and redistribution restriction flags.
  • Enrichment joins: procurement supplier names, KIPRIS owners, KOSIS statistical geography/industry context and LEI records.
  • Risk flags: personal-data caution, marketing-use blocked, terms unclear, controlled-access source, source stale and manual-review required.
  • Delivery fields: normalized sectors, CRM-ready segmentation, deduplication clusters, source confidence and suppression markers.

How CompaniesData Adds Value

CompaniesData turns fragmented South Korea source evidence into a usable dataset. The value is not just scraping portals; it is normalizing names, matching identifiers, separating official evidence from enrichment, preserving provenance and making the output practical for analysis, CRM enrichment, KYB and market research.

For international users, CompaniesData.cloud is the preferred owned route: request a CompaniesData sample for South Korea if you need a usable dataset rather than a manual source map. For Spanish-speaking or Hispanic contact-data workflows, CentraldeComunicacion.es is the preferred owned property. Private contact-data enrichment should always be documented separately from official company-data reuse.

No complete-bulk claim: this article deliberately avoids claiming a no single complete free bulk company-register file exists for South Korea; the stronger and safer claim is that official APIs and controlled evidence routes can be combined with provenance.

Yes, for API-led official data workflows. South Korea has strong public-data, disclosure, IP, statistics, procurement and LEI layers, but the legal-register side is controlled and should not be described as a complete open bulk register.

What is the best first source?

For status validation, start with the NTS business-registration verification/status API on data.go.kr. For securities disclosures, start with Open DART and DART. For formal registry evidence, check the Supreme Court Internet Registry Office route.

Can I download every Korean company for free from one official file?

No. The safer claim is that South Korea has strong official APIs and official enrichment sources, not one single complete free open company-register bulk download.

Does the NTS API give a full company profile?

No. It is useful for business-registration number verification and status checks, but it is not a full court-register extract, disclosure database or contact-data source.

What does Open DART cover?

Open DART covers disclosures and financial-reporting data for listed and filing-obligated companies. It is very useful for enrichment, but it does not cover every business in South Korea.

Are KIPRIS and KIPRISPlus company registers?

No. They are intellectual-property sources. They can enrich company profiles with patent, trademark and design-owner signals, but IP records must be matched and should not replace legal identity evidence.

Can procurement data be used as a supplier database?

Procurement data can identify public-sector suppliers and tender activity, but it is procurement-scope evidence only. It does not cover all companies and may involve portal-specific terms or login workflows.

Can public Korean company data be used for marketing?

Not automatically. Marketing-contact use requires separate lawful basis, suppression handling, privacy review and contact-data governance. Public company evidence and lead/contact enrichment are different layers.

Why use CompaniesData instead of collecting sources manually?

Manual collection is slow because sources use different identifiers, languages, formats, update schedules and access models. CompaniesData adds normalization, matching, deduplication, provenance and delivery formats that source portals do not provide as one product.
