Open company data in Malaysia: official sources, APIs and reuse rights

Open Company Data in Malaysia: Official Sources, APIs and Reuse Rights

May 27, 2026

Malaysia has a commercially useful company-data ecosystem, but it is not a simple free bulk register. A reliable reference article has to separate Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (SSM) as the registry authority, SSM product and authorised information routes, Malaysia’s open-data API documentation, intellectual-property records, securities-regulator registers, LEI data and several official but currently held routes such as DOSM i-MSBR, procurement portals and Bank Negara’s directory.

This deep refresh is written for analysts, KYB teams, market researchers and data buyers who need a practical source map rather than a thin list of links. It explains which Malaysian sources are official, which are paid or authorised, which can support API/open-data context, which are only sector or enrichment sources, and which claims remain blocked by SSM access terms, PDPA privacy boundaries, crawler warnings and the absence of a verified unrestricted bulk company-register export.

The existing CompaniesData article is already public at https://companiesdata.cloud/open-company-data-malaysia.html, but the Wave 7 version predates the current editorial standard. The 2026-06-09 source recheck found 11 publication-safe official or high-quality sources, 4 held routes, no hard 404/410 failures and 4 soft or controlled-access warnings. Held routes in this run are: Malaysia i-MSBR, Malaysia MyProcurement, ePerolehan, Bank Negara Malaysia FSP directory.

Key Takeaways

  • Best core authority: SSM is the primary official authority for Malaysian company and business information.
  • Access model: detailed official company information is commonly search-based, paid or delivered through authorised portals such as SSM e-Info, MyData SSM and SSM Search.
  • Open-data angle: data.gov.my and developer.data.gov.my provide clean open-data/API context, but they do not prove a complete company microdata register.
  • Held official context: DOSM i-MSBR, MyProcurement, ePerolehan and Bank Negara were source-relevant but held in this automated run because of SSL, timeout or 403 behaviour.
  • Contact-data boundary: official registry or regulator data is not permission to create email lists, phone lists, lead lists or sales-prospecting contact databases.

Editorial Methodology

The CompaniesData method starts with official sources first. Each Malaysian source is classified by authority, access model, reuse note, business use, limitation, link policy and live-check result. A source is clean for publication only when the automated check returns stable content or data without hard 404/410, challenge-page semantics, misleading soft-block behaviour or access-control responses that would create false confidence for crawlers and readers.

For Malaysia, that means treating SSM as the core legal-company source, data.gov.my as the open-data/API discovery layer, MyIPO as an intellectual-property enrichment layer, Securities Commission Malaysia as a capital-market regulated-person register, and GLEIF as a partial legal-entity identifier layer. DOSM i-MSBR, MyProcurement, ePerolehan and Bank Negara remain important official context, but this draft keeps them in held-source language until final browser/source QA clears the exact publication route.

Source logos and favicons are decorative recognition cues only. They make the Resource Pack and Source Matrix easier to scan, but the evidence remains the official URL, source owner, access model, reuse note, limitation and access date. Any final publication must keep those evidence fields visible on the page.

Coverage, Access and Update-Risk Analysis

SSM authority layer: SSM is the central authority for Malaysian company and business information. The authority portal, e-Search service page and company information product page are clean evidence that official information exists through SSM-controlled routes. The article can say SSM is authoritative, but it must not imply that every SSM field is freely downloadable or redistributable.

SSM authorised-service layer: SSM e-Info, MyData SSM and SSM Search are practical routes for company profiles, extracts, certificates or product-style company information. They are useful for due diligence and record verification, but their access model is paid, search-based, authorised or product-based. CompaniesData should flag these fields as official/controlled rather than open bulk.

Open-data layer: data.gov.my and developer.data.gov.my are clean in this run and provide a strong public-data/API story for Malaysia. They support a source map that explains APIs, catalogues and reusable government datasets. They do not, by themselves, prove that Malaysia publishes a complete company-register microdata file with unrestricted commercial reuse.

Statistical business-register layer: DOSM i-MSBR is source-relevant because it is a statistical business-register route, but it returned an SSL verification error from the automated node. In a final article, use i-MSBR as held/conditional context unless a browser or alternate official route verifies stable access. Even when verified, it should be framed as statistical or aggregate context, not as legal-entity profile microdata.

Procurement layer: MyProcurement and ePerolehan can enrich public procurement and supplier context. In this run, MyProcurement timed out and ePerolehan returned 403, so both remain held. If cleared later, procurement data should be stored as tenders, agencies, awards, suppliers and procurement identifiers, not as the full population of Malaysian companies.

IP and regulator layer: MyIPO, Securities Commission Malaysia and GLEIF cleared automated QA. They are valuable for trademarks, patents, licensed/registered capital-market actors and LEI-based cross-border matching. Their scope is partial by design, so they should enrich company identities rather than replace SSM.

Bank Negara layer: Bank Negara’s financial service provider directory is source-relevant, but it returned 403 in this automated run. Keep it as manual-review context until final QA clears a stable route. If used, it remains a financial-sector directory, not a general company register.

Reuse Checklist

  • Authority check: store whether each field came from SSM, an authorised SSM portal, data.gov.my, DOSM, procurement, MyIPO, Securities Commission, Bank Negara or GLEIF.
  • Access-model check: label paid profile, authorised portal, product page, search route, open-data API documentation, regulator directory, IP search, procurement portal or public LEI API.
  • Licence and terms check: preserve SSM service/product terms, portal terms, API documentation notes, dataset-specific reuse terms and no-endorsement conditions.
  • Source-date check: keep access date, source update date where visible, ingestion date, parser version and final browser-QA status.
  • Coverage check: keep SSM core identity separate from procurement, IP, regulator, statistical and LEI enrichment layers.
  • PDPA check: flag personal names, representatives, addresses, contact-like fields and natural-person-adjacent data for privacy review.
  • Marketing check: do not infer email, phone or sales-prospecting permission from registry, procurement, IP, regulator or LEI data.
  • Bulk-claim check: do not say a complete free official SSM bulk database exists unless an official source proves that exact claim.

Practical Manual, API and Bulk Options

1. SSM authority and product route

Start with SSM’s official portal, e-Search service page and company information product page. Use these sources to establish the legal authority, product categories and controlled nature of official company information. Record whether a profile, extract, certificate or document is public, paid, search-based or restricted by product terms.

2. Authorised SSM information portals

Use SSM e-Info, MyData SSM and SSM Search as practical official or authorised access routes for company profiles and documents. These sources are highly useful for verification, but the article should make the paid/controlled distinction visible. A production data model should store the portal route, product type, purchase/access condition and the source’s terms note.

3. data.gov.my and developer.data.gov.my

Use data.gov.my and developer.data.gov.my for Malaysia’s open-data and API-discovery story. They support programmatic public-sector data access and catalogue context. They should be presented as open-data infrastructure, not as direct proof that complete SSM company profiles are available as a reusable bulk file.

4. DOSM i-MSBR manual review route

Use DOSM i-MSBR only after final source QA clears a stable official route. When cleared, it should be explained as a statistical business-register or aggregate business-population source. It is valuable for coverage context and market sizing, but it should not be merged into SSM company profiles as if it were legal microdata.

5. Procurement route

Use MyProcurement and ePerolehan as procurement context only after the source route clears timeout and 403 behaviour. Store procurement identifiers, tender records, agency names, supplier names, award signals and publication dates separately. Procurement participation is a commercial signal, not proof of national company-register coverage.

6. IP, securities and LEI route

Use MyIPO, Securities Commission Malaysia and GLEIF for enrichment. MyIPO helps connect trademarks, patents and owner strings; Securities Commission Malaysia identifies licensed or registered market participants; GLEIF provides standardized LEI records where Malaysian entities have LEIs. These sources are clean but partial, so every joined record needs a source-scope flag.

Held Source-Risk Findings

  • Malaysia i-MSBR: held in automated QA with live-check result SSLError. It remains source-relevant for editorial context, but final publication should link it only after browser/source QA clears the route. Scope: Statistical/aggregate layer, not public microdata company profiles.
  • Malaysia MyProcurement: held in automated QA with live-check result ConnectTimeout. It remains source-relevant for editorial context, but final publication should link it only after browser/source QA clears the route. Scope: Procurement-only layer.
  • ePerolehan: held in automated QA with live-check result 403. It remains source-relevant for editorial context, but final publication should link it only after browser/source QA clears the route. Scope: Procurement subset only; not complete registry coverage.
  • Bank Negara Malaysia FSP directory: held in automated QA with live-check result 403. It remains source-relevant for editorial context, but final publication should link it only after browser/source QA clears the route. Scope: Sector-specific layer.
  • Complete free bulk SSM claim: blocked. The clean source stack supports official, paid, authorised, search, API-documentation and enrichment discussion, not a complete unrestricted SSM bulk company file.
  • Contact-use claim: blocked. SSM, procurement, regulator, IP and LEI sources do not create consent for unsolicited outreach, email extraction, phone lists or sales-prospecting databases.

Missing-Data Gaps

  • Full SSM bulk: this run did not verify a complete free official SSM company-register bulk file.
  • Beneficial ownership: do not claim complete beneficial-owner visibility from the clean source stack.
  • Paid documents: official SSM profiles, extracts and certificates may be product-based, paid or portal-controlled.
  • Statistical microdata: DOSM i-MSBR should not be treated as legal company microdata without explicit source proof.
  • Procurement coverage: procurement portals cover suppliers and tenders, not every registered company.
  • Financial-sector coverage: Bank Negara and Securities Commission sources are sector-specific.
  • Contact fields: emails, phone numbers and outreach-ready contacts require a separate lawful-basis and privacy workflow.
  • Route volatility: some official portals show timeout, SSL or 403 behaviour from automated QA and need final browser-source review.

Recommended Data Model

  • Entity table: CompaniesData id, normalized legal name, source legal name, country, source authority, source URL, access date and source confidence.
  • SSM table: SSM/source identifier where available, company name, entity type, registration status, profile/product route, paid/control flag and last-checked date.
  • Authorised portal table: portal name, product type, document/profile category, access model, terms note and retrieval status.
  • Open-data table: data.gov.my dataset/API reference, endpoint or documentation URL, licence note, update cadence and field coverage.
  • Statistical table: DOSM/i-MSBR scope, aggregate category, geography, industry or business-population field and microdata-block flag.
  • Procurement table: portal, tender id, procurement title, agency, supplier name, award or notice status, publication date and procurement-only flag.
  • IP table: MyIPO record id, mark or patent title, owner string, class or category, status and entity-match confidence.
  • Regulator table: Securities Commission or Bank Negara source, licence category, regulated-person or entity name, status and sector flag.
  • LEI table: LEI, legal name, registration status, managing LOU, GLEIF update timestamp and Malaysian subset flag.
  • Compliance flags: paid-profile, authorised-access, exact-search-only, open-data-context-only, statistical-only, procurement-only, sector-only, privacy-review, contact-use-blocked and manual-review-required.

CompaniesData Normalization and Enrichment Value

Malaysia’s official sources are useful precisely because they are not one uniform file. CompaniesData.cloud can preserve SSM authority, authorised access routes, open-data documentation, IP records, securities-regulator status and LEI identifiers while keeping provenance, update risk, access model and lawful-use notes visible. The value is not to pretend that controlled SSM products are open bulk data; the value is to normalize the records that can be used lawfully and to show what each source proves.

For English and international audiences, CompaniesData.cloud is the owned route for Malaysian company datasets and compliant enrichment context. Request a CompaniesData sample for Malaysia if you need normalized fields rather than a manual list of portals. For Spanish-speaking or Hispanic contact-data workflows, CentraldeComunicacion.es is the owned route, but private contact enrichment remains separate from official registry reuse.

FAQ

What is the best first source for company data in Malaysia?

Start with SSM, because SSM is the official companies commission and registry authority. Use the SSM portal, e-Search and product pages for authority and product context, then add authorised information portals such as SSM e-Info, MyData SSM and SSM Search where their terms and access model fit the use case.

Is Malaysia company data freely available as one official bulk file?

This recheck did not verify a complete free official SSM bulk company-register file. Malaysia has strong official sources and useful open-data/API infrastructure, but SSM company profiles and documents are usually controlled, paid, search-based or authorised-service products.

Can data.gov.my replace SSM?

No. data.gov.my and developer.data.gov.my provide open-data and API documentation context. They are valuable for public-sector data discovery, but they do not replace SSM as the legal-company source and do not prove unrestricted reuse of SSM company profiles.

Can DOSM i-MSBR be used as a company register?

DOSM i-MSBR is an official statistical business-register source, but in this automated run the route was held because of SSL verification behaviour. Even after route QA clears it, use it as statistical or aggregate context unless an official source explicitly provides company-level legal microdata.

Are procurement portals useful for company enrichment?

Yes, but only as procurement context. MyProcurement and ePerolehan can identify suppliers and tender participation when routes are clean, but procurement suppliers are not the same as the full universe of Malaysian registered companies.

Can public Malaysian company data be used for cold outreach?

Public registry, procurement, IP, regulator or LEI access does not create consent for email, phone or sales-prospecting outreach. Contact-data use needs a separate lawful basis, suppression handling, opt-out process and privacy review.

Why use CompaniesData instead of manually checking SSM portals?

Manual checking is useful for individual due diligence, but it is slow for dataset work. CompaniesData adds normalization, deduplication, source provenance, access-model flags, update tracking, enrichment matching and delivery formats while preserving the limits of each Malaysian source.
